The AI Invisibility Crisis for Accounting Firms
Prospects are using AI to answer increasingly specific queries, but the majority of accounting firms are effectively invisible.
Our new white paper helps accounting firms understand why.
Despite growing popularity as a discovery tool for online users, AI visibility has remained an elusive metric for many businesses who simply don’t understand how their online presence feeds into popular large language models’ results.
Companies need to know how they measure up in not just one search, but several. The answers AI systems provide can play a significant role in shaping a prospect’s shortlist — determining which firms enter the conversation and which never even know it’s happening.
In our new white paper, co-authored by OpenLens, we examine AI answer engine visibility among 100 of the largest CPA firms included in the INSIDE Public Accounting rankings to understand just how visible — or not — accounting firms are in the sorts of real-world questions their clients are asking.
The results:
Most Top 100 firms are barely visible.
79 of 100 firms appeared in fewer than 3% of the 3,480 eligible AI responses, and eight firms were never named at all.
Even the highest-scoring firms are visible only a minority of the time.
The highest-ranked firm in the study appeared in just 29.48% of eligible responses.
The limited visibility that does exist is highly concentrated.
The 10 firms with the highest appearance rates accounted for 61.3% of all study-firm appearances. The 25 firms with the highest appearance rates accounted for 87.2% in aggregate.
Firm size creates powerful “search gravity.”
The median firm in the highest revenue tier appeared in AI responses roughly 19 times as often as the median firm in the third tier, and more than 350 times as often as the median firm in the lowest tier.
Size does not fully determine visibility.
Windes, the smallest firm in the study universe by revenue rank, ranked 42nd on the AI Visibility Index. Several other smaller firms also substantially outperform what their revenue rankings would predict.
Visibility also depends heavily on context.
A firm's overall score can obscure large differences across industries, service lines, buyer problems, and AI engine.
For firms, the most important question is not, “Are we visible?” but “For what expertise, with which buyers, and under which circumstances are we currently visible?”
Our white paper breaks down who’s showing up, who’s not, and why that is.
